In Memoriam – Globe of New Jersey

Richard J. McCormack, a longtime employee of the Hudson County Social Affairs Department and a member of the Jersey City County Democratic Committee, died on November 20. He was 62 years old. A former vice chairman of the Jersey City Zoning Council, McCormick was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at age 13 and spent more than 20 years advocating for increased funding and diabetes research. He was a freelance writer for the Jersey Journal, and TapInto Jersey City.

Jean Sarafian, who became the first Democrat to win a seat on the River Edge board when he was elected in 1970, died on November 15. He was 87 years old. A veteran of the US Army, Sarafian became active in politics as an opponent of the Vietnam War. He was Democratic leader of central Bergen in the 1960s and defeated Republican John Iannone by more than 300 votes. He was re-elected for a second term in 1973.

Jean Armeno, who served as a Hopatcong city councilor for 24 years, died on November 23. He was 83 years old. A US Army veteran, Armeno spent 29 years as an East Orange police officer, before retiring as a captain. He went on to serve as Sussex County Deputy Sheriff and County Jail Director.

Lynn steckley, a former member of the Watchung school board, died on November 21. She was 84 years old.

Donald Burkat, who held senior public affairs positions at Prudential Insurance and Merkt, died on November 19. He was 91 years old. Burkat served in the United States Army during the Korean War. In the 1990s, after his retirement, he successfully lobbied the New Jersey legislature to fund an expansion of court-appointed special advocates (CASA) in all 21 counties.
