Gold Star Family ID Cards Now Available for Additional Family Members of Active Military Killed in Service

MIDDLESEX COUNTY – Gold Star identification cards are now available to spouses, domestic partners, civil union partners and children of service members who died while on active duty in the United States Armed Forces.

This includes children of whom the service member was a parent, legal guardian or other legal guardian, whether related by blood or by law, according to a Middlesex County press release Aug. 31.

Previously, Gold Star identification (ID) cards were only available to parents, legal guardians, and legal guardians.

The new law, which Governor Phil Murphy signed in late June, recognizes the close relationship and sacrifices of other immediate family members who have lost a loved one in service to the nation. The legislation was co-sponsored by MP Yvonne Lopez, who represents the 19th Legislative District which includes Middlesex County.

Gold Star Family ID cards entitle eligible family members to certain discounts or other military family benefits. This includes free admission to state parks and forests, free or discounted admission to New Jersey beaches, and free admission to the New Jersey State Museum. Additionally, a Gold Star Family ID card can be presented to participating merchants/vendors for discounts offered to veterans and Gold Star families, according to the press release.

“We owe a huge debt of gratitude to those members of our armed forces who defend our freedom – especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” said Middlesex County Commissioner Executive Ronald G. Rios.

“We can honor their sacrifice not only by remembering them every day, but by honoring the loved ones they left behind and recognizing the sacrifice that these family members – including their spouses, partners and children – have also done This is exactly what the Gold Star family ID program does.

Middlesex County Clerk Nancy J. Pinkin said the expansion of Gold Star family ID cards is “a small way to show our appreciation for all they have given to our country.”

“The County Clerk’s Office is ready to help every eligible Gold Star family member in Middlesex County obtain their Gold Star Family Identity Card.”
