Catalytic converters stolen from charities in Tuscaloosa trigger investigation

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama (WIAT) – Tuscaloosa Police investigators are trying to track down thieves who have stolen catalytic converters from several nonprofit agencies that help Tuscaloosa residents.

Habitat for Humanity director Ellen Potts told CBS 42 someone stole a catalytic converter from her delivery truck Tuesday morning in the Habitat parking lot.

“We came in the morning to find thieves overnight had stolen our catalytic converter from our Restore pickup and delivery truck,” Potts said. “This is the second time it’s been stolen, it was stolen in August and cost $ 29 cents to get it fixed.”

Habitat for Humanity builds homes for families in difficulty who need good housing. Potts says she is upset that someone is robbing a nonprofit that helps the community.

“It makes me angry but even more it makes me sad,” Potts said. “It’s a special kind of evil that someone steals from a nonprofit organization because we feel like we are doing the Lord’s work. “

Tuscaloosa Deputy Police Chief Sebo Sanders said the crime would not be tolerated.

“No, we are not going to tolerate it, we are going to strengthen the patrols and our investigators will study the case to close this organization,” said Sanders.

Police said SD Allen Ministries was also a victim. In July, thieves stole a catalytic converter from a car in the parking lot. The ministry provides beds for families in need.

Ellen Potts wants those responsible apprehended.

“We could buy roofing materials for one or two houses; we could do some wheelchair ramps. There are all kinds of things we can do with this money, but we’ll have to spend it on fixing our truck now, ”said Potts.
